Principal investigators planning to submit project proposals to BRFST please note the following points carefully.

  • It is proposed to allocate an amount of approximately Rs. 2 crores every year for funding the various projects under the NFP.

  • It is prefered that the project budget is kept moderate (typically up to about  Rs. 10 lakhs/year. However, this is NOT a pre-condition and the final budget allotment will be decided by the committee on a case-to-case basis as well as  depending on the number of proposals received per year).

  • It is prefered that PI's from one region pool their resources (expensive instruments and facilities) so as to reduce the project budget. PI's are requested not to propose high cost projects involving setting up of centres etc at this point of time.

  • Time scales of the project can be from 1-3 years for proposals from academic institutions.  Extension of the project (if required) would be decided by the review committee. For proposals from industrial establishments, the time is 1 year.

  • The PI is requested to closely interact with BRFST and his/her project co-ordinator from IPR for smooth operation of the project.

  • Please provide detailed specifications for Equipment / Computers / Software and  other high value items that are being budgetted in the project proposal.

  • An institutional overhead of ~ 15% of the project budget may be added to the project.  This overhead is Not applicable to additional funds sanctioned in subsequent years.

  • Fellowships for the project personnel : JRF : Rs.12,000/- p.m.  (+ HRA as per PI's institute norms) - fresh Postgraduate (MSc, MTech, MCA etc). Non-scientific staff (tech. assistant, project asst. etc) will not be supported by BRFST. Non scientific staff are to be provided by the PI's institute.

  • SRF : Rs. 14,000 p.m. (+ HRA as per PI's institute norms) - Postgraduation + 2 years research experience

  • Qualifiactions : NET qualified OR 1st Class in the qualifying examination.

  • Hiring of manpower for extended periods using contingency funds is  not allowed.

  • Travel grants (only for travel within India) is restricted to Rs. 1.0 Lakh per year, and will be as per the travel entitlements granted to the PI by the PI's institute.

  • Contingency and Consumable heads are restricted to 0.5 Lakhs per year for non-experimental projects.
